Sex Worker positive songs.

I’m always intrigued when I hear a sex worker positive (or mostly positive) song that becomes widely famous.  These artists are like sex worker rights activists, but aren’t part of the larger sex worker movement, which makes me sad.  I’d love to get people like Wyclef Jean to get even more down for our cause, and change minor little issues with their music.  Take this one for example:

For mainstream music, this is unbelievable right? Except the part where Hope says:

Take me away from here, so far
Where they ride horses, no cars
No more stripping in bars
Me and you ‘Clef, against the odds

Right there, it’s the pretty woman stereotype.  Sex worker rights activists clearly have an issue with this stereotype being pushed down our collective throats.  Certainly some of us want out of the business (whatever form of sex work), but we don’t need you in a white horse to come save us.  We are empowered human beings, capable of making our own destinies, even if we had our knight on a white horse fantasies as a little girl!

Do others have sex worker positive music?  Please share!  It would be great on March 3rd to have sex worker positive music at an event!

This presentation was in response to the significant protest and backlash against the organizers and supporters of the Sex Worker’s Art Show Appearance at William & Mary and protests against the Sex Workers Art Show themselves. As the show demonstrates there is a lot of support for the Sex Workers Art Show at William and Mary.

Many outstanding guests are being scheduled, please watch for updates! If you would like to be a guest on this revolutionary project bringing sex workers voices to the media please contact www.swopeast.org

If you are a sex worker or sex worker rights musician and would like to make your music available to XBN, please contact us as we are in need of both theme music and would love to feature and credit sex worker and sex worker rights musicians.

Sexing Up Social Change & Social MediaMelissa Gira and Stacey Swimme

The non-profit web, it’s so hot right now. But what of us sex activist outlaws — working queer politics, throwing feminist actions, laboring for sex worker rights, and promoting sexual health uprisings? Many of our community members are super web savvy, from gay teen YouTube celebs to third waving bloggers to podcasting porn stars, so doing outreach, advocacy, and organizing online makes complete sense (especially in frequently cash-strapped organizations). Then what does it take to do social change with social media strategically? How do you know when you’re doing effective work vs. just messing around on MySpace? And is there funding out there for online activism? Drawing on examples from international campaigns and peer-led trainings I’ve supported, I’ll run down free tools we can use now, brainstorm how we involve our communities in peer-based advocacy online, and facilitate discussion on how to launch a campaign.

Patron of D.C. Madam Accused of Hypocrisy

Listen to this story...by Brenda Wilson

Morning Edition, May 9, 2007 · Randall Tobias’ name popped up on the telephone list of a woman charged with running a call-girl ring in Washington, forcing the State Department official to resign. While he denied paying for sex, his involvement in the scandal received more attention in part because of his role in enforcing laws against prostitution.

WHAT:            wsRadio.com, an Internet Talk Radio Network headquartered in San Diego, California, announces decision to conclude a private sale or to auction SIX HOURS of exclusive radio interviews with Jeane Palfrey, aka “the D.C. Madam” on eBay.  Originally, there were FIVE hours but Jeane Palfrey recorded AN ADDITIONAL HOUR-LONG interview as a result of ABC NEWS’ failure last Friday to reveal important details, names, and dates from the information she provided them.

New excerpts from most recent one-hour interview to be released to attending media.

WHO:           “If we get the right offer from the right company we may not proceed with the eBay listing, although I personally would like to see what eBay, the world’s online marketing place will bring,” said wsRadio’s Chris Murch. Any interested parties should contact our VP, Director of Sales and Marketing Jack Warren at 858-623-0199 ext 105 or Jack@wsRadio.com.

On MONDAY, Palfrey released MORE PHONE LISTS to an independent journalist organization.  These lists, covering the “Clinton years” of 1997 – 1999, have been given to the Washington Independent Writers Association in Washington DC.  They began their investigation of the numbers and names today.

NOTE:  wsRadio has an exclusive contract with Ms. Palfrey to “Tell Her Side of the Story.” The show is hosted by radio veteran Lee Mirabal of wsRadio.com. “This is Jeane Palfrey’s story … in her own words … without the subjective editing and exploitation by media outlets, government agencies and more.” The content is riveting, as Palfrey describes details of her business, the women who worked for her and the high profile beltway clientele who used the service. wsRadio produces over 80 custom business, health, hobby and special interest shows. The network uses traditional radio formatting including commercial breaks, broadcasting to a global audience on the Internet. All shows broadcast live via the Internet and are then archived for listening on demand, 24/7.

Tobias: “Prostitution is Dehumanizing” — That’s Why He Only Gets “Massages”?

Darby Hickey, of Free Speech Radio News, files this report (direct download, .mp3) on PEPFAR, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, a $15 billion dollar program for international HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care. Here you can listen to the words of former client of Ms. Palfrey’s escort service, Randall Tobias, who administered the program until one week ago today, on how prostitution is “fundamentally harmful and… dehumanizing.”

With Tobias out, and PEPFAR up for reauthorization next year, we all ought to keep an eye on this:

Next year’s funding for the program is being appropriated in the coming months and re-authorization is pending in 2008. Recognized as a significant contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS, the plan, PEPFAR for short, also came with many restrictions on how the funding could be spent. Research shows those ideology-driven restrictions are undermining the goals of the plan, says Jodi Jacobson, Executive Director of the Center for Health and Gender Equity, which maintains the website PEPFARWatch.org.
