In response to the offline question about using Craigslist for work

I used Craigslist for maybe 2 weeks.  The experience was vapid.  Cheap clients who seemed to have no idea of how things worked, many new clients who “just had questions”.  Which totally pissed me off.  “I’m just browsing” works in retail stores, not when calling escorts.  While I fully endorse Craigslist re-opening the adult section.  I personally was very underwhelmed by the response.

I went to work for an agency instead.

  1. A LOT of it has to do with how you word your ads.
I make sure it does not look trashy. I guard the wwy I word it and I use the word GENTLEMEN in the header. It seems to weed out the “punks” somewhat.
I have had a mixture of inquiries, however, that is to be expected when you put yourself “out there” on a site that caters to a wide variety of people.
I have met some awesome people also and it was worth weeding through the undesirable few to meet the good ones. THAT is just BUSINESS…

  2. Oh, and an agency? To each his own I suppose.
I prefer to do my own thing far too much to trust an agency. Of course, being from PHOENIX, AZ and seeing SEVERAL AGENCY busts… one that was HUGE and is dragging on STILL after 3 years, and seeing everyone involved -even in other states get in big trouble – even the PHOTOGRAPHER is serving time… that was enough for me to totally see how easy it was for the “Gustappo” to INFILTRATE and how many loose lipped people sang like birds even before it all went down, and then after more so, and blew that entire thing.

I trust ME AND ONLY ME to do my screening, to make sure that I do not have information told to the wrong people and to assure myself that my associates are legit if I deal with anyone else such as doubles, etc.

The agency idiots actually HIRED an undercover cop as an escort!!! Like I said, agencies get sloppy- I trust ME.

I would rather BE SMART and muddle through a ton of stupid inquiries than work for someone else and wonder when it will all go down.

  3. @Cheyenna, Not a good market in Raleigh/Durham. I used the same wording that worked as an indy years past with success, but in Raleigh/Durham, it just didn’t work well on CL.
@Adding this, I’m going to go indie again. Am working on it now. More just a lack of start up money to do it in the next two weeks. Agency is by no means a first choice.

  4. I have used CL in the US (up until May 2009) and got very nice clients off there. I’ve known other girls who have gotten clients paying $500/hr+ off CL. It depends on so many factors. One never knows until they try.

And I’ve gotten a ton of time-wasting emails and responses from men I would never touch because I deemed them potentially deranged (or just really stupid). I’ve gotten a similar mix of responses from almost every ad site. The difference with CL ads are the sheer number of responses to one ad.

It was simply another advertising site for sex workers. Nothing more, nothing less, despite what the media claims.

  5. @Amanda, consider where I live. If my customers can name 4 of the 5 vowels it’s a miracle.

  6. The media and this anti trafficking movement fixation on Craigslist is a total farce. All that happens is everything moves. This was a states attorney generals and prohibitionist farce for attention. Nothing more.

  7. I used CL almost to the exclusion of other places because I got so many great clients there. When the adult section shut down, I chose to re-tool my marketing strategy. CL is a loss, but then, like the rest of us on here: I will survive.

  8. Jill, you don’t need any start up money to go indy.
there are lots of free places to advertise.

get away from the agency. (if you havent already)
you do realize that the rapist you got set up with was a regular customer of theirs and they were most likely aware of his violent nature ? remember his call to the agency praising your performance ?? he obviously wasn’t concerned about his status with the agency. .

that dude probably pays the agency to talk you out of calling the police. .. i’ve heard of this from other girls who suffered abuse from a client and then later found out that their agency continued to book the client with new girls.

nobody cares about your ass more than you… certainly not an agency. … they fill your head with all sorts of reasons you can’t go indy but they lie, they lie, they lie.

you have a great support network right here… if you need help with anything at all, i’m certainly available to you.

i think every indy i know started with nothing… thats normally the reason we start. in this business. (although not necessarily the reason we stay)..

  9. @jenna,

Can I email you off list? I have some questions I would love to ask but would rather do it offline than online.

  10. !!!!!!!!!!!!

Jill, listen to Jenna, she’s very knowledgeable.

I have a lot more to say but not enough time to type it all out at this moment. Will comment later. In the meantime please stay away from that agency! And feel free to email me as well. What I’ve read so far is awful and I’m very sorry that happened to you😦
