Yay for Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates

On a brighter note, we may have two celebrity spokespeople!

Legalise prostitution: Michelle Pfeiffer

24 Jun 2009, 1558 hrs IST, ANI

Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates want the U.S. Government to legalise prostitution.

The two stars, who play historical hookers in Stephen Frears’ new period movie Cheri, are wondering why the ”world’s oldest profession” has been banned throughout most of their native America.

“There is an argument to be made for providing some protection for prostitutes. It would solve a lot of problems for them. They”re going to do it anyway,” Contactmusic quoted Pfeiffer as saying.

Her co-star Bates agrees: “For health reasons, it would be better for people to enjoy those pleasures.”

  1. I’m glad that Pfeiffer and Bates have taken this position, but the article is in the foreign press, so it’s not gonna be read over here in the US.

Perhaps Bates and Pfeiffer can be contacted about publicizing their stance over here.

  2. We so need some celebrity spokepeople for the movement.

However…their stance is legalization and Bates thinks it’s best for health reasons. Everyone thinks sex workers are disease vectors when it’s far from the truth. They’re believing a stereotype like anyone else and it bothers me. They still want to regulate and control “wild” women.

  3. Yes, but let’s face it: unless you’ve actually had a reason or the desire to critically think about these issues, that will be the conclusion most people would come to. We live this reality, and as such these issues are very clear to us; they do not, so the issues are less clear. I am sure with a little education they could understand the difference. I once didn’t know the difference.

Most people are really interested when I mention that there is a difference between legalization and decriminalization, and explain that different countries employ different policies based on those differences. And most people don’t have the first clue that there is a difference. Even whose who would wholeheartedly support our cause often use the term “legalize”.

Perhaps a little friendly letter writing campaign is in order. I am sure they will get shit from the haters.

  4. Going to see “Chéri” (an adaptation of the Colette novel with Pfeiffer and Bates) this week! Whatever the cast’s awkward publicity-politics, Colette’s novel is lovely; it’s about an older working woman in early 20th century France falling in love with a coquettish boy!

  5. I agree about the need for education and refining their arugment.

So how does one go about successfully contacting a celebrity? Especially on such hot topic? I think we’ve discussed this before.

  6. They must have fan sites, or contact people. I will look it up and post info here.

  7. Catching this conversation late. Has anybody taken action? i would think that since nothing creates publicity better than controversy, we ought to approach them at an angle that will help sell their movie. Has it been released outside of the major cities yet? I’ve never even heard of it, but that’s no surprise. I wonder if they’re still touring to promote the movie.

  8. Their movie has already been shown, Stacey. But you could still ask them if they are willing to speak out some more.

  9. I’ve always thought Kathy Bates to be a fearless woman and actress (remember her nude scene in About Schmidt? Talk about bold!) You might want to go her message board:

Educate her on your profession. If I was famous I’d probably read my message board. Just a thought.
