Support sex worker rights in Providence, Rhode Island TOMORROW by phone!!:
Tara Hurley from Providence Rhode Island made a documentary about the sex workers there and legislation that is being proposed to make sex work illegal. She interviewed many sex workers in the area and has honestly represented their views and situations in her film. Because this film contains the truth about the issue, Tara is being slammed in the press by academic Donna Hughes, Chair of Women’s Studies at University of Rhode Island. Hughes has ties to right wing anti-choice Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey (who promoted the anti-prostitution pledge, which denied HIV funding and treatment to sex workers worldwide). Hughes called George Bush the “first feminist president.” Hughes is reputed to be in the pocket of the US anti-abortion religious right. This is the stuff that will speak far more to listeners than her anti-prostitution stance. We need to discredit Hughes.
Donna Hughes will be on Dan Locke’s radio show tomorrow at 4pm. Please call in to the show to question Hughes’ credentials and affiliations:

I’m going to try to get on this as a call in. The show is running now
thanks Jill, and it’s today the 21st on line now.
It will be so awesome if you call in, Jill. The number is posted in first message on this thread. I’m listening as I type and something that’s bothing me is how Dan Yorke (the host) is acting like those of us who support decriminalizing prostitution deny that human trafficking is happening, and that’s not true of many of us. I acknowledge that human trafficking is happening. I just don’t agree with trafficking sex workers into jail cages under the guise of fighting trafficking.
Eventually the producers let me on. I had to agree to be very respectful to Donna or they would dump me from the call. I didn’t get much of a chance to say a whole lot and a lot of words were put in mouth but I got to get on and say as much as I could.

I called in to the show early and was told
phone calls would be at the end of the show. I had to go to city hall to shout down the new racist anti massage legislation. I was there for 3 1/2 hours along with the SAGE people. They’re all getting paid to sit there in that hearing.
Just like the haters on yesterday’s radio who are getting paid to be there to promote their hate based legislation that will result in violence against our class of worker.
And I thought it was really interesting how they were so concerned with the film maker’s meeting with me while I was out there speaking at Yale Law School.
Tara Hurly and her movie is a threat to them because it disputes everything they say.
So they’re only left with personal attacks. The usual hate speech they are known for.
This is OFF TOPIC, but I went to see the movie “The Girlfriend Experience” in Manhattan yesterday.
I have to give the movie my kudos, because the lead character is still an escort at the end of the movie, something which I don’t believe has ever happened in a mainstream movie about this subject until now. Usually the sex worker ends up dead or leaving the profession or something like that.
The drawback is that it only portrays “high end” female escorts, and not male, transgendered, or sex work of different status and variety.
Anyhow, I recommend it.
