Legal Brothels suck.

Don’t come here if you value your sanity, freedom, and self respect.  Rules have changed and it has become like a boot camp, 6th grade classroom and jail.  I don’t feel safe posting here while living and working here.  It’s hell and I am really unhappy.  Hoping to last until Friday.  I cry all the time.  Will post in detail later, after I leave as I will probably not return here or ANY legal brothel in Nevada again.  Amanda, you were right…email me privately for moral support.  we aren’t allowed to be in our rooms, but we ARE allowed to have our laptops in the kitchen, so email me if you want details, but I WILL post as soon as I leave..LOTS to report.😦

  1. Shit. I don’t know what you’re going through right now Mariko, but I just want to say that sucks and I’m sorry you’ve got to deal with it.

  2. Oh shit. ditto what trin said. wishing you a safe and quick journey out of there.

  3. Be safe, take care of you first.

  4. Mariko, I think its very brave and admirable that you decided to try something new and get a work experience different from what you were used to. I am *so sorry* you are having such a rough time. I will say a prayer for you today (to the Goddess). You are a strong and powerful spitfire, and while it fucking sucks to have to be in painful resilient endurance mode, you have our support and best wishes.

I also think that what you are doing, blogging about your experience, is incredibly valuable and a great service to other sex workers. I’m sure I’m not the only one who also thought it sounded like a fun and interesting adventure to take up Bella’s offer and check out the brothel, but based on Amanda and your reports I think you may be saving a lot of us some really hard times.

I’m just sorry you have to go through all the bullshit first. Fucking sucks.

Much powerful healing whore love to you.

  5. You, know, there is something absurd about sex workers working in the middle of nowhere. Providers should be where *people* are. There are probably more sex workers in New York than most places have people altogether, and that’s the way it should be. This is where the customers are.

Nevada has legalized both prostitution and gambling, but gambling is gaudy, upfront, and in your face, while prostitution is hidden away. If you are going to have prostitution legal, then stop being hypocritical about it and put the brothel in town, not where the coyotes are.

  6. REMEMBER: a good pimp can make deep fried shit on a stick look delicious and nutricious…Bell@ talked a good talk and had all of us in the room *seduced* and thinking about “how much money we could make” didn’t she? Who else wants to sign up for being on lockdown 24/7 and getting woken up at any hour of the night to do sex work for $150 and then be dressed and ready to be in the bar or the living room with 9 other drama queens ALL friggin day, night and morning by 11am (11am-3am)?

I just heard that another Desiree Alliance person is coming here today..The girl from SWOP Alabama whom I just met for the first time in chicago. Please do not come here without emailing me or Amanda first!! If I can stay long enough before I jump out of the windows and forfeit all my money, or if the house finds a way to fine me and take my money first then I will not leave the house with the no money that I rolled in here with, but I will have my self worth. If I manage to recruit at least 2 new sex worker activists from here, I will have done something great. If I leave here with enough money to stipend my lawyer and pay my rent for September then I will have gotten what I came here for finnancially. I have 6 days here at most, and hopefully it will not get worse than it is only better…

  7. Mariko, my suggestion would be for you to try to recruit some activitists, as you suggested. It would certainly make things better for everyone (unless you feel that your safety would be compromised).

You have the right to be in your room if you want to, the right to work in decent shifts, and the right to leave the premises when not working a shift.

And for godsakes, this is the 21st century. How about getting rid of those bells and get some beepers instead.

  8. Yeah, All rights have been put on hold here for sure. Another brainwashing pimp job who spits the word “independent contracter” at the girls constantly to fool the girls into thinking that they have control of their lives. There A LOT of things that are happening here that I feel are violations of labor laws, but I will pursue them *with any other interested parties* AFTER I survive this next 6 days. I want to have a conference call with me and Amanda and others to determine how to move forward with good intentioned women like Bell@ who think that they are doing great things by being a woman in the brothel biz but really just disguising the old boys control game by putting a vagina on top.

  9. Is Bella ever even at the brothel, or does Shaunia just run the show? It’s possible that Bella might not even know what’s going on or how bad the conditions are, but then again, it’s possible that she may know. Nonetheless, I’d recommend contacting her about this incase she doesn’t know, even if it’s after you leave.

  10. This, along with Amanda’s report, has been quite disheartening, I must tell you.

  11. it sounds like i am real glad I did not look into going out there further. Hang tight M, you’re in our thoughts.

  12. there is a very real reason Brothels are called “Pussy Prison”

stay strong, get though it, get home.

  13. 10:43pm. SOME BITCH JUST [intentionally] SPILLED TABASCO SAUCE ALL OVER MY LAPTOP keyboard and closed it -WHILE I WAS IN MY ROOM WITH A DATE. This is the last straw. I am leaving tomorrow. This is why it is called a “CATHOUSE.” Working illegally is way better, no doubt. This place might be legal, but its just like JAIL anyway, with snaky backstabbing bitches that you cannot trust that you are stuck on lockdown with to boot.

  14. That sounds just awful. I am so sorry you’ve had to suffer, and I can’t imagine a worse fate. My escort friends here are all very happy and never tell the kinds of awful stories I have read by you and Amanda. Working independently- if on the edge of legality- seems so much more appealing.

  15. Mariko,

I’m so sorry this hasn’t worked out for you. I was truly hoping I had a bad experience because I just wasn’t a good team player and that someone else could make this work for them. I’m almost in tears reading your pain.

Know that I’m thinking of you. Know that as soon as you get out, get your ass to Vegas and get some support. I’ll be here waiting for you (and so will Susan).

  16. Is Bella even THERE? I mean, she talked such a good game and seemed like such a cool person…I’d totally considered heading out there, but team player? Not my strong suit for certain! It sucks that you and Amanda both had such horrible experiences.

  17. Mariko, what happens if you leave sooner? Is that feasible? The soonest you can leave I truly advocate that you do. Your survival and well being is the ultimate victory in any situation. Having gone through something similar and akin to what you are experiencing I wish I had more to offer than friendship, my concern and my advocacy that the moment you are able to leave that you do. The most important victories are won by th survival and well being of each of us. Please take care of you and do what you need to for you. There isn’t any economic or political victory that is more important than you and your well being.

  18. I know it’s just empty words, but I just wanted to offer my support, Mariko. You are very strong.

  19. I thought legalization was supposed to fix everything. So it’s dangerous to be an escort in Vegas, it’s dangerous in the legal brothels, it’s dangerous on craigslist, what they hell is going on?

  21. Davis,

It’s not as dangerous working as an indie (if you do it smart) as it is working at a brothel. IMO

  22. I’m praying for you, Mariko. You’re strong and you’ll survive this intact and better for it. Hopefully the woman from SWOP-AL will change her mind about going. Is there a way we can send out a mass email to Conference attendees about what went on at Bella’s? Make phone calls, since not everyone has consistent internet access?

  23. This is Rachel from SWOP-Alabama. I’m at Bella’s right now. I’m having a pretty positive experience so far (day three). I appreciate that y’all are concerned for me, but I’m doing all right.

  24. Rachel,

I hope you continue to have a good experience and make lots of money. Stay safe — which means making your own decisions.

  25. Thanks, Amanda. I think I will have some constructive conversations and interactions with the folks here. more in a minute….

  26. I was pretty positive on day 3..
Good Luck..Don’t forget that everything that I have written is truth, so I woudn’t trust anyone there.

  27. I didn’t have big issues with the people themselves, my problems were more with the surrounding system. Mariko, of course, had direct conflicts with some of the people there.
