$pread Magazine Launches 2008 Voter Guide For Sex Workers

$pread Magazine launched the $pread 2008 Voter Guide today as part of Grind The Vote 2008, a voter registration drive covered by Bound, Not Gagged here.

The Voter Guide taps into the positions of the two major-party presidential candidates and their positions on health care, immigration, reproduction rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, drugs and harm reduction, and affordable housing.

From the Voter Guide:

In an effort to connect the dots of party politics, $pread Magazine has compiled this voter guide setting forth the positions of the two major-party presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain, on issues of particular importance to sex workers. Nothing in this guide should be understood to imply endorsement of or support for either candidate – its purpose is only to provide sex workers and their allies with information to help them decide on an individual basis which, if either, of these candidates to support.

  1. That’s definitely cool that Spread is putting out a voter guide for sex workers, but it seems weird that you would only talk about the presidential candidates. I think local politicians could be a lot more important (or equally as important) for sex workers rights.

  2. Well, thanks for your feedback. It may seem weird to you but $pread is an all volunteer staff (that’s right – ALL volunteer) who spend collectively upwards of 100s of hours a week producing a magazine in addition to the Grind The Vote event and now this Voter Guide. So while it would be great to also focus on local elections, we barely had time to put together this Voter Guide.

$pread appreciates your support and suggestion and encourages you to host a Grind The Vote near you and to create a local Voter Guide.

  3. Hey “hmmmm,” this is William Rockwell from $pread. You’re right – state and municipal elections have loads to do with criminal statutes, health care, housing, and other issue dear to sex workers, that’s why $pread is hosting an event in each of these four cities, D.C., NYC, Chicago, and Las Vegas, as well as launching the campaign “nationally!”

In all of these events, whether burlesque shows or dance-parties, local issues are brought to bear by our partners, Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive (HIPS) and Different Avenues in D.C., Sex Workers Action New York (SWANK) and Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP-NYC) in New York City. The Desiree Alliance in Chicago and SWOP Las Vegas. If you are located in any of these cities, or would like to host an event yourself, let $pread know to see if we can help!
