RedLightDistrictChicago Plays “Truth or False?” On Prostitution Stats

RedLight reporter kittenINFINITE hits the streets of Chicago to find out what citizens really think about the statistics reported in last month’s study on prostitutes in Chicago, as well as those stated on Melissa Farley’s prostitution research site

  1. That was smart, informative and hilarious. Cheers!

  2. It’s too bad that she couldn’t find more sex workers and men who had actually been with sex workers to interview, but I can certainly understand why few would want to admit to it on video.

The Chicago survey was absolutely ridiculous. Reading it gives the impression that they picked up crazy old drunks out of the ghetto and offered them $40 (which they did do) to participate in a study.

It has all your standard PRE “study” tricks. Not only do they ask the men to estimate the number of sex workers who were sexually abused as children, have a pimp, suffer from low self esteem, and other questions they couldn’t possibly know the answer to; but when they get answers they don’t like, they dismiss it.

    For example:
BELIEVING WOMEN CHOOSE TO ENTER PROSTITUTION: 87% of interviewees thought that women freely choose to enter prostitution. 62% thought that the majority of women in prostitution are fully informed about the nature of the sex trade before entry. Interviews with women in prostitution suggest the opposite is true.

    …and….

BELIEVING PROSTITUTION PREVENTS RAPE: 39% percent of interviewees believed that
the availability of prostitutes makes the rape of other women much less likely, although there is no research evidence to substantiate this belief.

I wish they would publish the questionaire as well, so we would know how things were worded. CAASE said of the interview process “When literacy was a problem, questionnaires were read aloud.” I’m guessing most of the quotes they used came from the illiterate guy, and that he was discussing it more like a conversation- shooting the breeze, if you will- rather than answering actual questions about himself and his practices.

All in all, it’s a crap study with no academic credibility, and I’m sure it will be lapped up by legislators and law enforces who will use it to harm the very women it claims to want to protect.

  3. […] when I bitched about the Chicago study a while back? The awesome kittenINFINITE has a video clip online dissecting the same report for RedLightDistrictChicago.  […]

  4. This is the most ridiculously off base critique of ANY sort of research I have ever seen.. She was simply looking for people as ignorant as her to interview. Anyone who thinks prostitution is a victimless crime has never seen it up close
One of her subjects was even obviously drunk. Kitten is an asshole, pure and simple.

  5. No, we were not looking for ignorant people to interview…our participants were random individuals willing to talk to us, just like those in the CAASE study, except we didn’t offer them any money to participate like CAASE did. As Kitten explained at the beginning of the video clip, we were conducting our own “biased and discredited research” to balance out CAASE’s (and Melissa Farley’s) similar research.

While some of our subjects may have been drinking at a bar, none of them were so drunk that they couldn’t answer our questions coherently. in fact, once we started talking to them, we found out that many of them had interesting (and positive) opinions about prostitution. By the time we were finished, we had a mini-crowd of people around us willing to talk on camera.

As far as Kitten being an asshole… well, she’s brave enough to go out there and put her face on camera while asking people about these issues. She’s one of the most intelligent and informed people I know on the subject of prostitution and has helped more sex workers than you probably ever have. We have seen prostitution up close. We’re not victims and refused to be labeled as such.

  6. Most of the women who post on here are sex workers, joseph. I don’t know how you could have missed that. I suppose kitten is an asshole to you because her interviews found people who disagree with you?
