Debate at William and Mary monday night

I’m debating Sam Berg and John Foubert monday night at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va,  anyone in driving distance who would like to attend would be great.  This is likely to be a partisan crowd toward the other presenters as my sense is they have been waiting for a shot at a sex worker rights activist given previous history.  They also need a speaker on feminist pornography which is not my strength.  Please contact me off list via swopeast.org if you would like to be connected to the conference coordinator.  I’m also trying to coordinate an XBN live broadcast to coincide with this starting at 630 but we need a host.  Anyone able to do it?

Yes – I’d definitely like to have you on the panel.  It’s gonna be maybe 1.5 hours long, so from 5:30-7PM on Monday night; panelists will briefly introduce themselves (5-7-ish minutes each), then moderators will pose some questions for maybe 30-40 minutes, and the rest will be audience Q&A.  We’re going to be doing video interviews with panelists/audience members after the event.

Our other confirmed panelists are John Foubert, who is the professor of education here at the college who adamantly and publicly opposed the Sex Workers Art Show.  He is a self-identified feminist, and he believes that viewing pornography increases male sexual violence against women.  He also believes that the SWAS is pornography, and thus that having it on campus increases the likelihood of rape for women at this school.  He’s also the founder of the national all-male sexual assault prevention group 1-in-4 (http://oneinfourusa.org/).

The other confirmed panelist is a woman named Samantha Berg.  She’s the creator of the web-site genderberg.com.  She also seems to have coined the term “pornstitution,” and is a co-founder of the Antiporn Activist Network, and “has dedicated herself to educating people about the inherent harms of sexual capitalism.”

It may just be the three of you.  We’re working now to try to find someone with a knowledge of a genre called feminist pornography to round out this panel, but it may not happen.

I’ll be sure to send you some of the questions we’ll be asking panelists as soon as I have them.

Thanks! and Take Care!

  1. Hi there. Unfortunately I’m on the other side of the Atlantic, otherwise I’d certainly come and support you. At the time of the ruckus about the sex worker art show, I posted a comment on the W&M college newspaper site, in response to comments by John Foubert. The response was not a little vitriolic. http://www.flathatnews.com/opinions/1744/the-show-must-go-on

I’m sure that you (and all defenders of the right of a person who sells sex to be treated like a person who sells computer software) are accustomed to defending yourself against this sort of nonsense. But I do wish I could be there to support you.

Good luck, and if it does get broadcast let us know — we might be able to listen in over the web.

    Oh, sweet Jesus.

Ren, if you’re reading this… dare you make an appearance?

  3. Ren, would you? Could you?

  4. i’ll be sitting there next to you, Jill.

  5. Hell yeah!!

  6. oh, for me, this is a dream come true…

  7. Well be prepared for violence. We know how those slave owners are. They don’t want to loose their property.

  8. maxine- I’m always prepared for violence.

  9. Thank God!!! I am a helpless, defenseless, shy wallflower, 🙂

  10. An example of the response to the event, however, the “male” named whozit is Nikki Craft, the alleged anti porn feminist.

  11. I saw that they asked for somebody with expertise on feminist pornography and that really caught my interest because that’s something I’m into. However, I’m not in the area so I won’t be able to attend. Here is a link to more information about feminist pornography: http://www.feministpornography.com .

  12. fear not, i am brushing up on my feminist pornography, and I shall be mentioning “hot & bothered’

  13. We’ll see how strong their convictions are and whether they are willing to face a debate with actual sex workers and sex worker rights activists that they can not moderate, edit or censor. It is much easier to debate someone who can not respond because their posts will be deleted, moderated etc, than it is to face them in front of an audience where they can not be silenced, tokenized, objectified etc, as they do with us. While as a rule sex worker rights, sex worker blogs do not censor opposing views, we do not get the same respect from opposing sides. This debate levels that playing field.

  14. As to concerns about violence from the opposing side. I doubt it. This is an open audience knowing it will be a debate, not a rad fem/prohibitionist rally or a Christian congregation meeting. They will need a crowd of believers to support the mentality that empowers the violence others have faced when opposing the radical feminists and right wing christians. This is an open audience. I also have faith in the arguments that Ren and I will present will bring a significant amount of support from the audience to our position. This is a neutral site, not their home field, thus I would be surprised if they resort to violence.

If they do………… Good luck. People get what they give with me.

  15. Though I won’t be able to attend, it would be a good idea to post the room location for people who can attend.

  16. Sam is trying to have me kicked off the panel

  17. Ren,

You’re a pornographer. — among other things. You have every right to be on the panel to discuss the issues.

I hope this bullying is not allowed.

    XX

  18. I do wish I could go. Is there anyway to record it and podcast it or upload it on Indaybay.org?

  19. Its a possibility. If we can get agreement from the other participants it may go live on XBN, http://www.xxbn.net although that is at best a long shot given the drama surrounding this event already and one participant not wanting Ren to be on the panel.

  20. There will be a live call in show just after this event 7pm Eastern http://www.xxbn.net Listener call in number 646 200 3136

  21. What are you talking about? FEMALES RULE!!!
