Yet another example of violence from law enforcement and injustice in the legal system when the victim is a sex worker.

  1. Thanks for posting this Jessica.

This story popped up in my radar a week or two ago. They wanted her beeper records, but there was no real reason given as to WHY they were investigating her death. Something to do with a possible affair with the mayor (or something like that). This is just terrible.

FYI, according to the first article, she was a part-time stripper and I’m not even sure she was stripping at the time of her death. Notice what the most important fact about her life is, according to the media.

  2. Amanda,

I knew you would know about this!

“Notice what the most important fact about her life is, according to the media.”

Exactly. Violence against sex workers is only relevant in the mainstream media for salacious headlines.

We always hear about ‘this thing that just happened’. Conclusions to the stories rarely make headlines.

‘Bad things happen to bad women’, and that’s pretty much all they want you to know.

  3. There are a ton of stories whose endings I haven’t been able to find, like the strike in Bolivia, a recent protest in Mexico, a variety of murder cases (like this one). Resolution and conclusion, especially for sex workers, is not important.

It drives me nuts because I really do want to know what happened. Since sex workers aren’t real people, I guess it doesn’t matter to the media.

“‘Bad things happen to bad women’” yes, there’s certainly a huge element of that in every story. Sex work is often dangerous, but geez, sometimes the killer is the one actually responsible for the killing.

  4. and its always lovely to see women and feminists saying there is no need for rights for sex workers, because that just normalizes the profession. Heaven for bid women in sex work get actual…justice!

  5. For those of you who aren’t in Michigan, this is connected to the (more famous) “blow job text message” scandal of last month, where it was revealed that the Mayor of Detroit and his chief of staff were sending sexually explicit text messages to eachother on city owned cell phones.
The mayor will tell you this is a private matter of infidelity. Except that, the texts that dont’ say, “oooh baby suck my cock” say things like, “let’s get those nosy cops fired before they find out about me sucking your cock”. The nosy cops in question sued for under whistle blower rules and won 8.4 million dollars which our deeply impoverished city has to pay.
That 8.4 million dollars sure does rankle me and the mayor’s corruption and level of entitlement is pretty frustrating too. But all of that still detracts from what those nosy cops were investigating: allegations that the police were not properly investigating the murder of a 27 year old mother of three. Tamara Greene was just going about her life when somebody shot her 18 times.
I don’t think the mayor and his thuggish bodyguards had her killed. What I think might actually be worse: I think that to hide his own unrelated corruption, the mayor of Detroit sabatoged the investigation. A beautiful young woman with three children, a goddamn citizen of the city he is supposed to represent, and the mayor decided that keeping his infidelities secret was more important than making sure Tamara Greene got justice.
And he believed he could get away with it because she was a sex worker and he assumed (rightly) that no one would care.

  6. Leah,

    Thanks for the further details!
