Not an Invitation to Rape

A friend sent me the link to these posters from an LA anti-rape campaign. While it has nothing to do with sex work, it has everything to do with a woman’s sexuality being under her control. I really liked these posters and thought I would share.

  1. those are great…

  2. Idea! Why not do a series of posters like this using sex workers as models? It could be self-portraits (and I know some of us have photo skills and could shoot others), or cover stereotypical sex worker situations (like the stripper in the posters I linked). Obviously, no one’s face would have to show.

I got the idea last night. Haven’t come up with a good slogan yet, although I’m sure someone else will.

There’s enough of us here with Photoshop that we could create the posters easily and then get them cheaply printed at any number of places (online or off). Plaster them everywhere! All over the US!

Okay, I’m already envisioning something that doesn’t exist. Anyhow, I would love to do something like that by and for sex workers. It doesn’t have to be complicated to make a statement.

  3. Amanda, maybe you want to check out the posters and other artwork at this site:

  4. Thanks for reminding me about ISWFACE! But none of the artwork I saw on the site had the simple clarity of these posters. There is an impact with a direct, unambigious message.

PS: Not sure that I managed to find all the artwork on the site, but looked in the obvious “art” sections.

  5. All the posters I found at iswface are text-based. Good for people to stand in front of for several minutes but not really effective for quick passers-by.

  6. Yes, we need something that grabs attention and makes immediate impact, like the posters for this campaign. Attention-getting and pointed.
