God Bless Sin in Las Vegas

Sex Workers Appreciation Day, October 5th, 2007, had more than 25 people show up in solidarity and support of Sex Workers Rights at the Glitter Gulch on Las Vegas, Nevada’s fremont street. In 2 hours, we collected over 150 signatures from people all over the United States. Tourists from all over, and locals took our pictures and learned about Sex Workers rights, many for the first time.

Our signs:
“Farley, Don’t Tread on me”

“No sex worker phobia will be tolerated”

“Support your local sex workers”

“Sex Worker Rights are Human Rights”
“We Honor Ourselves With Respect and Empowerment”

The scene: 4 people from California, 2 sisters of Perpetual indulgence, 1 ACLU lawyer, 2 totally wasted men(who held a sign for us) and around 15 local advocates, allies and sex workers.

The protest started out with just the 4 of us Crazy girls from California. We roamed into what Vegas Calls “The Fremont st. Experience”… and boy, what an experience. The streets were filled with an extremely diverse crowd of people. Our first mission: Find the Girls of Glitter Gulch, and then we set out on our way. In the midst of all the madness, and finally at the gentlemen’s club, a lady dressed in her own type of exotic wear yelled at the top of her lungs “No free VIPS! Girls are shaken but sure not breakin’ come on in and see what their mamas gave them!”

We then met up with Crystal Jackson who set us right up to protest. The managers and owners of Glitter Gulch sure were proud to have sex Workers supporting the ladies of the gentlemen’s club So proud in fact, we got them to sign our petition too! We were an interesting attraction for the crowds of Fremont.

At one point, the celling lit up with a voice from the overhead projecting screen. It was an advertisement for some kind of sound quality product, although you would think that they were selling big speakers like vibrators with selling points like ” My sleek and voluptuous sound will get your ears off with enjoyment”. Followed by good old American Propaganda with the ‘God Bless America’ song playing throughout the whole little brain washing picture show above our heads…. “God Bless sin in Las Vegas” I say….

We want to thank Lynn for letting us stay with her, and Crystal & Susan for helping organize everything locally!

In Solidarity with Sex Workers,
Robyn, Tara, Acire and Val.

  1. Thank you for the recap, Robyn, and congratulations on obtaining signatures for the petition. Did Melissa Farley and her supporters show up?

  2. I think it is fair to say that Melissa Farley has no supporters because NOBODY SHOWED UP. But what a great opportunity it was for us. No matter if the Girls of Glitter Gulch called themselves sex workers or adult entertainers they were glad to have us out there supporting them and the people in Vegas loved talking with us about sex worker rights. Viva LAS VEGAS.

  3. I noticed that their blog has not been updated or changed at all. It still states that 35 UNLV members were signed up to protest at 7pm on the 5th. I wonder if some of them showed up and didn’t see their contingent in an organized demo, so they left- or posed as camera-toting tourists/locals and asked you all questions, etc. It seems strange that they just never made an appearance.

  4. Excellent!

  5. No one showed up because they were totally on to you. You will have to guess how that happened.

By the way, it’s not nice to send out fake press releases or set up fake myspace pages or pose as college students when you’re not. These tactics are why I don’t support Jill Brenneman and her posse any more. If you are doing the right thing you don’t have to lie and be coniving all the time. Jill’s personal vendetta against Farley is bringing down the sex workers movement. Who needs all that negativity.

  6. Artygal, what do you mean by “setting up fake myspace pages or posing as college students when you’re not?” What evidence do you have that Jill is doing that, since you made that accusation about her?

  7. The lastest Jill Brenneman conspiracy theory. Now I’ve gone from having an army of infiltrators co-opting feminism, a paid shill for the porn industry, having a cult of followers trying to silence anyone who disagrees with me, to being accused of faking myspace pages and pretending to be a college student setting up a protest.

Wrong on all counts. I had nothing to do with the protest or lack thereof. I didn’t realize until reading this that there wasn’t one. Artygal who are you? Your accusation is completely baseless and false.

As far as Farley goes it was less than a week ago when she attempted to acquire the text of part of my history to post on her website completely against my will. If I wanted her to use my history on her website or for her purposes i would have authorized it rather than telling her the exact opposite in 2003.
