New Interviews With Nevada Brothel Workers

The controversy about the Nevada brothel system impelled a journalist to go and interview brothel workers herself. They, not her, refute Farley’s claims. They don’t go out of their way to paint a rosy picture. Their view tends to be one like a lot of workers — the job works for them but it’s not perfect. They like the potential money. They also like the freedom to do their job without the threat of arrest hanging over their heads.

Farley is quoted in the article as wanting to stamp out legal prostitution. I don’t have a problem with that — this is the perfect opportunity for Nevada to try some decriminalization.

  1. interesting reading, thanks for posting it.

  2. I’ve worked in the Nevada brothel system and I echo the sentiments expressed by the brothel workers in this article. Also, which brothels have barb wire around them? Farley said in this artilce that many of the brothels have barb wire fences, but I haven’t seen this where I worked or at the brothels I’ve driven past.

  3. When I was last in Nevada, I drove past a few closed-down brothels with large chain-linked fences around them, but I figured that was just to keep vandals and curiosity-seekers off of abandoned property.

  4. Did she go into and interview anyone from inside the barbed-wire places?

  5. The title of this article ought to have been, “Brothels get a tough look by a poverty pimp with a degree”

  6. Maxine – did you even read the article? That could be the title of Farley’s book, but not this article.

  7. quick question im doing a paper over the legalization over brothels, my questions are what are the safety measures being induced into the buisness. How many times are brothels checked for STDs weekly, monthly? How do the counties take out there portion of the earnings the women make? When it comes to the female image, what is represented. What is the avg yearly earnings one can expect coming in to this buisness? Thanks alot guys i apreaciate the awnsers

  8. I used to work in the Nevada brothel system, so I’ll answer the questions based on my experiences and the knowledge I gained. Please note that it’s been almost 4 years since I’ve worked at a brothel, but I’ll answer your questions the best I can.

-“What are the safety measures being induced into the buisness?” Clients are required by law to wear condoms for sexual intercourse and oral sex. Also, some brothels have panic buttons that sex workers can click if a client is dangerous. Furthermore, sometimes sex workers provide safety to other sex workers by warning them of suspicious clients, educating them about protecting themselves from STD’s and providing them with condoms, or intervening when a client is acting dangerous or behaving like a complete creep to another sex worker.

-“How many times are brothels checked for STDs weekly, monthly?” We go to the local health clinic to get weekly cultures, and I believe that at some brothels, the doctors visit the brothels directly. We are required to be blood tested for HIV/AIDS at least once a month. Different counties may have different laws about this, but in Nye County, sex workers must get blood tested again if we are off the brothel premises for at least 24 hours.

“How do the counties take out there portion of the earnings the women make?” The counties charge licensing fees to the sex workers and also, we get our cultures at the local county health clinic, which costs us money.

“When it comes to the female image, what is represented?” There’s a variety of images, and this could vary according to the brothels. The vast majority of sex workers in brothels appear to be from their 20’s-40’s. Generally speaking, women at the bigger brothels tend to be younger, though even at the smaller brothels, it’s very rare to see women older than their 50’s. There are a vareity of ethnicities, though most of the women are white. There are also a variety of body types, though the larger brothels tend to consist mostly of thinner to average weight women. I met women with a diversity of personalities as well as educational and occupational backgrounds while working in the Nevada brothel system.

    – “What is the avg yearly earnings one can expect coming in to this buisness? ” This varies so much that I can’t even give you a “ballpark” figure. The amount of money we make varies based on our personalities, physical appearance, where we work, how frequently we’re at the brothel and how long we stay, whether we get fined for any reason, the amount of the brothel house fees, the clientele, our rates, how much business the brothel gets, how much we’re willing to do, etc.

  9. “Did she go into and interview anyone from inside the barbed-wire places?”

What brothels have barbed wire? I keep reading about Nevada brothels having barbed wire, but nobody is saying specifically which ones. Having worked at Nevada brothels and driven past other Nevada brothels, I haven’t seen barbed wire. I think the Moonlite Bunny Ranch has a gate at the entrance, but not barbed wire.
